EKG & Pharmacology
This classroom-based course is designed to improve electrocardiogram (ECG) recognition skills and pharmacology knowledge for treating cardiovascular emergencies; it comes with First Aid, and is a precursor to taking the course for Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) . This course is for healthcare professionals who participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, and others who require this specialized knowledge for their job.
Learning Objectives:
After participating in this activity, Health Scholars will be able to:
- Explain heart anatomy and basic electrophysiology
- Explain normal ECG measurements
- Recognize basic arrhythmias
- List basic ACLS drugs
- Describe drugs, doses, and routes of administration during cardiovascular emergencies
Health Scholars benefit from this class by supplementing their college life sciences curriculum with clinical focus on cardiac electrophysiology and its immediate applications in the healthcare setting. As healthcare scholars are in units with cardiac monitors, they will be able to enjoy the class and their shifts with rhythm interpretation used for patient care. Moreover, students are educated on common cardiac pharmacology, and will supplement their knowledge prior to their professional health school and supplement their interview experiences.
